PALO ALTO
Palo Alto is located at the northern end of Silicon Valley. It includes portions of Stanford University and is headquarters to a number of high-technology companies, including Hewlett-Packard. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 58,598 residents. Palo Alto is located 15 miles north west of San Jose and 35 miles south east of San Francisco.
Palo Alto is considered a highly desirable community. Its tree-lined residential homes offer a visual feast of distinctive architecture and well-kept gardens. Education is a core value for Palo Alto. Its school system is top-rated, and 95% of its high school graduates go on to college. More than 40 percent of Palo Alto residents over the age of 25 have a graduate degree or better, and the guy next to you at Starbucks just may be a Nobel Laureate. Being Stanford University’s hometown has its advantages. The cultural and academic offerings on campus add immeasurably to the intellectual life of Palo Alto; tailgating at Stanford Stadium is a favorite activity in the fall.
Downtown Palo Alto is a vibrant mecca for those looking for the boutique-and-gallery experience and is within easy walking distance of the Stanford campus. Another hot spot for shopping is California Avenue, where the tone is set by the funky public art lining the street. Town and Country Village and the Midtown area are favorites of local residents. Downtown is also filled with upscale restaurants, charming bistros and bargain eateries.
